Ruth E. Carter

Ruth E. Carter is the two-time Academy Award–winning American film costume designer. Best known for turning the Black Panther superhero into an African King, Carter made history as the first Black person to win the Costume Design category and earned Marvel Studios its first Oscar recognition. For Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Carter made history, again, for her outstanding costume design work and became the first Black woman to win multiple Academy Awards in any category and the first costume designer to win for the first film and its sequel.

Empathy is Essential: Creative Problem Solvers Have Compelling Stories to Tell

Join us as we share compelling stories of students tackling complex design challenges, such as students redesigning their school’s visual identity, creating fantasized or idealized cardboard cities, turning negative perceptions into positives via powerful photography, and reinventing shoes from an entirely new perspective. Funding for each project was supplied by NAEF, and empathy was an essential component to all.
